The features that identify a fish

  • Mouth — size, angle, whether the jaw extends past the eye (the classic largemouth vs smallmouth bass test), barbels on catfish.

How to take a photo that gets an accurate ID

  1. Shoot side-on. A lateral view shows body proportions, fin placement and markings all at once. Top-down shots hide most field marks.
  2. Get the whole fish in frame. Head shape and tail shape are both diagnostic — don't crop either.
  3. Spread the fins if you can. Fin ray counts and shapes separate many lookalikes.
  4. Use natural light, avoid glare. Wet fish reflect; angle slightly away from the sun so spots and bars stay visible.
  5. Keep hands clear of the head and tail. Support the fish under the belly instead.
